For the past two years, I have picked a new word to be my life theme in the upcoming year. Two years ago my word was Organization and last year it was Simplify. I love choosing a word to help me have a specific direction for the year.
This year we chose a word to be the theme for our whole family and then we picked a verse to go along with it. I thought about what our new word would be off and on and talked to Eric about it.
Our word for 2020 is: Brave
The definition of brave according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is: to face or endure with courage; having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty.
We had a few other options for our word this year. Here were our top choices:
Fearless was my top choice, but it didn’t feel quite right. I am not fearless. I have doubts, worries, and anxiety about changes coming in 2020. I don’t want to try and talk myself into being fearless. Then I thought of brave and Eric and I both agreed right away that was the correct word for this next year. Yes, we will be walking through times of uncertainty, there will be scary, new and exciting adventures, but we are going to endure with courage. We will be brave.
Why do We Need to be Brave:
2019 held big changes for our family and 2020 has even bigger ones instore. Changes can be amazing but they are also scary.
In 2019, we sold our dream home, I chose to stay home from work after having our fifth baby, and with family, we started an online business.
This spring, after a lot of prayer and planning Eric and I have decided to pursue our dream of traveling as a family. We are selling possessions. Making plenty of runs to donate our belongings to Goodwill. Some of our furniture and special belongings we are packing up in totes. The rest is going into our RV as we set out to travel around America as a family.
I am SO excited, but I am also scared! That is why Brave felt like the perfect theme for this new year.
The Verse We Chose
Maybe it will be very obvious after reading our plan for this new year what verse we picked for our family.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
It felt like the perfect verse. As soon as we settled on our word being brave, the verse was picked in about 1 second. We are working on memorizing it together as a family.
The end of the verse, “for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” is where we find our courage and strength, it is the reason we can be BRAVE.

Make it a great day!
